The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a travel palliative program, deploying over 50 buses to facilitate affordable travel for Nigerians during the festive season. The buses, operated by transport unions such as RTEAN, NURTW, GIGM, and ALBON, will offer 50% discounts on fares from Abuja to various parts of the country.
According to Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Transportation Adeleye Adeboye, the program will run from December 24, 2024, to January 5, 2025, with over 50 vehicles, including hybrid buses, conveying passengers from Abuja and Lagos to state capitals across Nigeria.
Key Features of the Program:
– Centralized Fare System: To ensure smooth operations and eliminate discrepancies in fares.
– Return Trips: Fully accounted for, allowing passengers to easily travel back to Abuja or other destinations.
– Hybrid Vehicles: Running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and conventional fuel to reduce costs and promote sustainability.
– Adequate Refueling Arrangements: Made to ensure uninterrupted service despite challenges with CNG availability along certain routes.
The program aims to transport approximately 288,644 passengers across 144 routes, with the railway network projected to transport 20,000 passengers daily. The government’s initiative has been commended by transport unions, who pledged their support in delivering quality service and ensuring safe travel for Nigerians during the festive season.
