The newly appointed European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, His Excellency Gautier Mignot, has reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s democratic growth during his maiden visit to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday, January 28, 2025.

Addressing officials at INEC’s Conference Room, Ambassador Mignot emphasized the EU’s longstanding partnership with Nigeria and the importance of democracy in fostering human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Highlighting Nigeria’s vibrant democracy, he praised the country’s progress since the return to civilian rule 25 years ago.

“Democracy is a shared value and a continuous project. It evolves, faces challenges, and adapts to opportunities such as digital technology and the fight against disinformation,” Mignot stated.

He noted that the EU’s engagement in Nigeria centers on mutual respect, sovereignty, and political neutrality.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, welcomed Ambassador Mignot, expressing gratitude for the EU’s sustained support, particularly in the electoral processes since 1999.

Prof. Yakubu noted that the Ambassador’s visit underscores the strong partnership between INEC and the EU.

“The EU’s cooperation has significantly contributed to strengthening Nigeria’s electoral system. The EU Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) report from the 2023 General Election provided 23 recommendations, eight of which require INEC’s direct action,” Yakubu said.

The INEC Chairman detailed improvements made following the 2023 elections, including better training for ad hoc staff, enhanced voter accreditation using BVAS technology, and seamless voter card distribution in off-cycle elections.

He reiterated that Nigeria’s Federal Government funds core electoral activities, with EU support limited to consultancy and technical assistance through implementing partners.

Ambassador Mignot reaffirmed the EU’s dedication to democratic governance, highlighting the ongoing €19 million European Union-Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) program.

He emphasized that collaboration between democracies is vital to addressing challenges such as misinformation while promoting transparency and electoral integrity.

Prof. Yakubu stressed INEC’s commitment to regular stakeholder consultations and continuous improvement of electoral operations.

He announced ongoing reviews of Nigeria’s electoral framework and planning tools to enhance future elections.
