The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Honourable Oyetola has emphasized the imperative of establishing a National Coast Guard, highlighting its potential to support sustainable development, enhance economic growth, and ensure environmental protection.

Oyetola said this on Thursday during the public hearing organized by the Senate on a bill to establish the Nigerian Coast Guard [ESTABLISHMENT] BILL 2024 [SB.575]

Nigeria’s vast coastline, spanning 853 kilometers, and its 10,000 kilometers of inland waterways, make it an ideal location for maritime trade and commerce. However, the country’s marine resources are facing existential threats from human activities, including pollution, overfishing, and unsustainable exploitation.

Key Objectives of the Nigerian Coast Guard:

Maritime Safety: Establish clear protocols, enforce safety regulations, and oversee navigation routes.
Search and Rescue: Respond rapidly to maritime emergencies and conduct timely search and rescue operations.
Environmental Protection: Prevent pollution, enforce environmental regulations, and conserve marine ecosystems.
Enforcement of Civil Maritime Laws: Uphold laws governing civil maritime activities, enforce fishing regulations, and prevent illegal exploitation.

The establishment of the Nigerian Coast Guard is expected to complement the efforts of the Nigerian Navy, fostering a safe and sustainable maritime environment aligned with international best practices. This initiative has the potential to strengthen Nigeria’s blue economy, protect its natural resources, and ensure prosperity for future generations.
