The Independent National Electoral Commission has appealed to the media to ensure reportage that will encourage Nigerians to participate in the electoral process.
INEC National Commissioner in charge of Information and Voter Education Festus Okoye made the request on Thursday at a special townhall meeting organised by the Nigerian Guild of Editors in Abuja.
Okoye added that there was also need for media to fully understand the newly signed Electoral Act Amendment Bill so as to interprete the benefits to Nigerians.
Speaking earlier, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors Mustapha Isah said the townhall meeting which will be organized in all geopolitical zones of the country, is aimed at bringing senior editors together to brainstorm ways of contributing to national development through effective reportage.
“We are more interested in the issues of development, education, security, youth employment and poverty eradication, and other issues affecting the common man.. Poverty doesn’t recognize ethnicity and religion. The ordinary Nigerians are faced with the same challenges , whether in Potiskum, Jos, Gboko, Gusau, Enugu, Warri , Ibadan, Calabar or Ekpoma. They just want the basic things of life” he stated.
The theme of the townhall meeting sponsored by the US Embassy in Nigeria is “Agenda Setting for Sustainable Democratic Culture”.
