Benin City, Edo State – As the Edo State Governorship election approaches, INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu has called on political parties and candidates to honor the commitments outlined in the Peace Accord they voluntarily signed. He emphasized that adhering to the agreement is essential for ensuring a peaceful and successful election in the State.
Prof. Yakubu made this appeal during the Peace Accord signing ceremony on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Benin City. He recalled the successful implementation of the Peace Accord in the 2020 Edo State Governorship election, where political parties and candidates adhered to their commitments, resulting in a peaceful election despite pre-election tensions.
The INEC Chairman urged parties and candidates to commit to the implementation of the accord and pass the message to their supporters for compliance. He also charged INEC staff to work conscientiously with integrity, emphasizing the importance of diligence and honesty in ensuring a successful election.
Prof. Yakubu cautioned against compromising the integrity of the election, warning of serious consequences for any actions that might undermine the process. He expressed satisfaction with the level of preparedness and urged staff to complement these efforts by ensuring efficient logistics management and prompt opening of polling units.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Edo State, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, thanked the Chairman for his support and urged staff to reaffirm their commitment to the Commission, their oath of neutrality, and their service to the country. He cautioned them to resist temptations from desperate politicians who might try to compromise their integrity.
