As the clock is ticks down in Edo State, Nigeria, today, Thursday, September 19, 2024, marks the final day of campaigning for the governorship election. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a reminder to all political parties to wrap up their rallies, processions, and media campaigns by midnight tonight, as prescribed by Section 94(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.
From tomorrow, any form of campaigning will be considered illegal and may attract sanctions, as outlined in Section 96 of the Electoral Act 2022. This means no more billboards, no more social media ads, and no more rallies.
Additionally, INEC has warned parties, candidates, and their supporters not to wear campaign attire or bring campaign materials to polling units on Election Day, Saturday, September 21, 2024. This is to ensure a peaceful and free electoral process.
The electoral body is urging all stakeholders to comply with the provisions of the law to avoid any issues. With just two days to go before the election, the stage is set for the people of Edo State to exercise their democratic right and choose their next leader.
