ECOWAS Condemns Coup in Guinea Bissau, Suspends Country from Decision-Making Bodies

The ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC), has condemned the coup d’etat in Guinea Bissau, suspending the country from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies until the restoration of constitutional order.
The extraordinary session, held virtually on November 27, 2025, was attended by:
H.E. Jose Maria Pereira Neves, President of the Republic of Cabo Verde; H. E. John MAHAMA, President of the Republic of Ghana; H.E. Joseph N. BOAKAI, President of the Republic of Liberia; H.E. Bola Ahmed TINUBU, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; H.E. Bassirou Diomaye Faye, President of the Republic of Senegal; H.E. Julius Maada BIO, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone; H.E. Tiemoko Meyliet KONE, Vice President of the Republic of Cote
d’Ivoire; H.E. Olushegun Adjadi BAKARI, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the
Republic of Benin and H.E. Sering Modou NJIE, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia.

Cooperation and Communities of the Republic of Guinea Bissau and H.E Baba KAMARA, Special Envoy on Terrorism and Head of ECOWAS Election Observation Mission to Guinea Bissau.
The MSC demands the unconditional release of detained officials, including President Umaro Sissoco Embalo, and calls for the National Electoral Commission to declare the results of the November 23, 2025, elections without delay. A High-Level Mediation Mission, led by ECOWAS Chair, President Julius Maada Bio, will engage with coup leaders to restore constitutional order, among other demands.
