The Heads of the African Union Election Observation Mission, ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, and the West African Elders Forum have condemned the military coup in Guinea-Bissau, describing it as a “blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process”.
In a joint statement, the three bodies expressed concern over the announcement of a coup d’etat by the armed forces, while the nation was waiting for the announcement of the election results. They commended the people of Guinea-Bissau for their strong civic engagement and peaceful voting process.
The statement called on the African Union and ECOWAS to take necessary steps to restore constitutional order, and urged the armed forces to release detained officials, including those in charge of the electoral process. The people of Guinea-Bissau were also called upon to remain calm, as the international community reaffirms its commitment to supporting the country’s democratic path.
