DICON@60: President Tinubu’s Vision for a Stronger Defence Industry

On August 14, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu marked the 60th anniversary of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) and inaugurated the Africa Defence Industries Conference. He expressed pride in DICON’s achievements, highlighting its contributions to national security and technological advancement.
President Tinubu who was represented by the Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume emphasized the significance of self-reliance in defence capabilities, citing DICON’s production of ammunition and equipment that support the Armed Forces and Security Agencies. He recalled the corporation’s role in the civil war and its potential for growth in the African market.
Recall that the President signed the DICON Act 2023 into law, creating an environment for modernization and innovation. He also launched the DICON Evolution Strategy and Road Map 2030, aimed at bridging performance gaps and repositioning DICON as a global player.
The President highlighted the benefits of upgraded capabilities, including advanced equipment for the armed forces, job creation, human capital development, and economic growth. He emphasized the importance of international collaborations, inviting partners to join Nigeria in building a safer and more prosperous Africa.
As President Tinubu concluded his remarks, he called on stakeholders to support the implementation of the DICON Evolution Strategy and Road Map 2030. With a united effort, Nigeria can build a stronger, more innovative, and globally competitive defence industry, securing a brighter future and contributing to global peace and stability.
With a deep sense of responsibility, the Minister of State, Defence, H. E Matawalle spoke tracing DICON’s journey from its establishment in 1964 to its current status as a vital pillar of national security. Matawalle highlighted DICON’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s defence architecture, providing essential equipment and supporting military capabilities.
The Minister noted that the future holds even greater opportunities for growth and transformation because the recent enactment of the DICON Act 2023 marks a turning point in the history of Nigeria’s defence sector, empowering DICON to operate with greater autonomy and efficiency.
The Minister expressed excitement about the Maiden Africa Defence Industries Conference, a groundbreaking initiative bringing together defence experts, industry leaders, and innovators to foster collaboration and explore new frontiers in defence technology.
The Minister concluded by congratulating DICON’s leadership and staff, expressing gratitude to President Tinubu for his unwavering support, and urging unity and determination to realize the ambitious goals set out in the Vision and Strategy Road Map 2030.
The Director General of DICON, in his speech, welcomed the guests and reflected on the corporation’s journey since its establishment in 1964. He highlighted DICON’s evolution, adapting to changing military technology and global defence trends, and its contributions to Nigeria’s peace and security.
The Director General emphasized the significance of the celebration, not only for DICON but also for Nigeria’s Military Industrial Complex. He acknowledged the challenges faced by DICON and the need for cooperation, creativity, and courage to overcome them.
