Dangoki Appeals to Wike for Creation of Directorate of Sanitation in FCT.

the General Secretary, Environmental Health Officers of Nigeria, FCT Chapter, Comrade Ismaila Haruna Dankogi has appealed to the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja in Nigeria, to Hon. Minister of FCT His Excellency Nyesom Wike to create the Directorate of Sanitation.
Comrade Dankogi made the appeal during in with the media interaction with the Association on way forward to achieve an effective and sustainable Sanitation standard in FCT.
The Secretary opined that the creation of the Directorate is necessary and will go along way to address the gap in the proper coordination and Integration of the activities of the Professionals whose absence in their job has caused increase in the prevalence cases of tropical disease that occurs and spread as a result of poor Sanitation.
“It is evidently clear that the Environmental Health Practitioners whose job is to oversee Sanitation services are working without coordination as they are spread and working in different department with their core mandate and responsibility left uncoordinated. Hence, resulted to lack of Sanitation data to plan for sustainable and improve Services for the future.
Therefore, the call for Creation of the Directorate will serves as a catalyst for efficient service delivery to address the recent observation made by the Honourable Minister.
“Obviously, this decision of Hon Minister should be likened to declaration of State of emergency on Sanitation and this has to be taken beyond fire brigade approach but to draw a sustainable plan that will help in restoration of the aesthetic view of the city of Abuja and the Federal Capital Territory at large”, Dangoki stated.
He explained that the proposed Directorate, if given consideration will change the perspective view about Nigeria by the International community whom upon their visitation to Abuja will draw conclusion about Nigeria sanitation standard.
“To achieve success in line with the above submission, I am glad to inform you that there are well trained human resources with capacity to manage the affairs of the Directorate when created. They are professionals with prerequisites qualifications and cognate work experience as registered and licensed Environmental Health Consultants/Specialists/Officers/Superintendents etc., to help achieving success in this onerous task.
With the above consideration, I can assure you that the menace of dirty premises, over shading of items, street trading activities, displays of wears for sales on roads set back and drainages, indiscriminate discharge of waste water, keeping of junks in an unauthorized place and littering indiscriminately and dumping of refuse, street car wash activities and presence of shanties and un-organised kiosk along the street will be adequately control. And all act or omission constituting nuisance will be abated technically including that of open defecation and urination on the street within the Federal Capital City. Thank you”, the Secretary concluded.
