Cross River Re-run: Unknown Gunmen abduct officials, materials
The re-run elections in Yakurr/Abi Federal and Abi State constituencies of Cross River State today held across various wards and witnessed a large turn- out of voters who waited patiently to exercise their franchise.
Reporter who monitored the exercise said that Unknown gunmen allegedly abducted election officials with materials that were headed for the 8 polling units in Afafanyi/Igoni-Igoni ward under Abi state constituency.
The Federal Commissioner of Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in charge of South South region, Dr. Mohammed Lecky told newsmen that the incident occurred in the middle of the river leading to the community.
Backed by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Alalibo Johnson and the Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state Mrs. Irene Oghuma, the Federal Commissioner said the unknown gunmen accosted the Electoral officials and went away with all the voting materials along with the SPO (State Presiding Officer).
According to him, the security men that accompanied the materials and men on election duties decided to avoid casualty by not engaging the unknown armed men in the middle of the river.
The APC candidate, Dr Alex Egbona who decried the incident expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise so far but his PDP opponent, John Gaul Lebo however declined comment.
