In the face of rising unsubstantiated claims, uncensored hypes and unguarded statements in the media space, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON), has reassured the public of its stance to sanitize and penalize individuals or organizations, such as OAPs, influencers, skit makers, advertising agencies, and brand owners who breach the Nigerian Code of Advertising and the ARCON Act by broadcasting unapproved ad campaigns.
ARCON Director General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo stated this in a press statement made available to News Dot Africa recently, tittled: “MISINFORMATION, DISINFORMATION, EXAGGERATION,
UNSUBSTANTIATED CLAIM, UNVERIFIED PROMISE, BRAND HYPE ETC.
BY OAPS, SKIT MAKERS, INFLUENCERS, AND BRAND OWNERS.
He noted that the spate of misinformation, disinformation, exaggeration. unverified promises, unsubstantiated claims, brand hype etc by OAPs, Skit Makers, Influencers and Brand Owners is not only worrisome but has also led to loss of savings, investments and has caused medical challenges in some cases.
“This is to reiterate that all advertisements and advertising in Nigeria or targeted at the Nigerian market must align and conform with the Nigerian Code of Advertising and other pronouncement of ARCON in line with the ARCON Act” ARCON DG stated.
Dr. Fadolapo warned that continued abuse of the advertising space by some stakeholders will no longer be tolerated as it has negative effect on the economy in particular and to the citizenry at large.
“ARCON will seek to prosecute any person or body corporate who sponsors, caused to be exposed, create or expose unapproved advertisement on any medium without approval of the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP).
“We count on your continued support to sanitize the Nigerian Advertising Industry” he concluded.
