ANAMBRA GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION: INEC Announces Timeline for Primaries

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that party primaries for the 2025 Anambra State Governorship election will commence on March 20, 2025, and end on April 10, 2025. This was disclosed during the Commission’s regular weekly meeting held on March 6, 2025.
INEC Chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood recalled that in line with the provision of Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act 2022, the Commission published the Notice of Election on 13th November 2024, over 360 days before the date fixed for the election on 8th November, 2025. By the provision of the Timetable and Schedule of Activities for the election, the conduct of primaries for nomination of candidates by Political Parties commences in the next two weeks i.e. 20th March 2025 and ends on 10th April 2025.
He disclosed that so far, 12 out of the 19 registered political parties have submitted their detailed primary schedules, while the remaining seven parties have been reminded to submit theirs promptly.
INEC emphasized the importance of adhering to the proposed primary schedules, as sudden changes can disrupt the Commission’s workflow and increase costs. The Commission also urged political parties to cooperate with its monitoring staff to ensure a smooth and transparent primary process
