Abike Dabiri Visits South African Embassy, Demands Justice Over Death Of Elizabeth Ndubuisi

 

Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Citizens in Diaspora Commission on Tuesday visited the South African Embassy in Abuja asking the authority to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of a Nigerian, late Elizabeth Ndubuisi in her hotel room in South Africa.

Dabiri who arrived at the Embassy in the company of the brother to the deceased, Chiedu Ndubisi was looking sober.

She said that the family and Nigerian government would like to see the end of the investigation on the circumstances that led to the death of the deceased who died on June 13, 2019, at Kempton Park, Gauteng Province.

Dabiri said that for the sake of the family of the deceased and the country, the government of South Africa should do everything possible to get to the root of the matter.

Her words: “We are here to implore you to please ensure cooperation and to ensure that the mysterious circumstances of the death of late Elizabeth will be unravelled.”

“For the sake of the family, we need to get closure to know how, why when and what happened to her. We know we have been dealing with xenophobia in South Africa and which is in fairness to the South African government we have about eight policemen that have been charged for cases allegedly involving of maltreatment of Nigerians in South Africa.

She also called on Nigerians to be of good conduct wherever they find themselves adding that they are in the embassy to demand justice and fairness in the matter.

Dabiri said that they would continue to monitor the development as the investigation on the matter is in progress. She, however, noted that it is for the interest of the country.

While responding the South African Acting High Commissioner, Bobby Moroe said that the investigation has been opened on the matter in Johannesburg adding that the embassy would make the details of the outcome of the investigation open to a family of the deceased and Nigerian government.

He added that the South African police are working closely with the management of Emperor Palace Hotel where the incident occurred. He added that video footage from the hotel has been obtained and been studied. He explained that the embassy would provide an update as soon as they get information from the authority regarding the matter.

Moroe said that they are constrained and their hands are tight to speak more on the matter noting that the matter is still under investigation.

“We will not like to put the horse before the cat because we think this is a very sensitive case . We need to treat it with greater respect. We are talking about the loss of human life and our government is dealing with it with greater priority,” Moroe stated.

On his own part, Chiedu Ndubisi thanked the South African government for their concern toward getting the cause of her death. He expressed confidence that the family would get justice at the end of the investigation.

The deceased, Elizabeth Ndubuisi, died on June 13 at Kempton Park, Gauteng Province. She is said to be the Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN).

She was in South Africa to attend the conference of the African Insurance Organisation (AIO).
