NYSC DG Commends Abia Government for Unalloyed Support

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, has commended the Abia State Government for its sustained support and commitment to the welfare and operations of the Scheme in the state.
Nafiu gave the commendation when he paid a courtesy visit to the Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti, at Umunu, Umuehim, in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.
The NYSC DG particularly appreciated the state government for the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp, provision of a new Secretariat complex to enhance the Scheme’s operations, and upward review of the allowance of Corps Members serving in the state.
He described Abia as a peaceful and Corps Members-friendly state, noting that the number of female Corps Members serving in the state was higher than that of males.
According to him, Abia is also among the few states in the country where Corps Members are deployed to all the local government areas.
Nafiu appealed to the state government to implement the recently reviewed allowance for Corps Members and commence the second phase of the renovation of the NYSC Orientation Camp.
Responding, Governor Otti congratulated General Nafiu on his appointment as the NYSC Director-General and assured him of the state’s continued support for the Scheme.
The governor recalled that his dissatisfaction with the deplorable condition of facilities at the NYSC Orientation Camp during his visit in 2023 informed his decision to approve a comprehensive overhaul of the camp.
Otti disclosed that the first phase of the renovation had been completed, adding that he had directed the commencement of the second phase.
The governor expressed satisfaction with the contribution of the 8,890 Corps Members currently serving in Abia and requested the deployment of additional Corps Members to the state.
He stressed that Abia was not only home to Corps Members but also welcomed people from across the country who came to live and work in the state.
Governor Otti cited the Head of Service, Mr Benson Ojeikere, as an example, noting that Ojeikere came to Abia as a Corps Member and was subsequently offered automatic employment into the state civil service after distinguishing himself during his service year.
The visit underscored the commitment of the NYSC and Abia State Government to strengthening the welfare of Corps Members and improving the facilities and conditions under which they serve the state.
