ABUJA — Men have been urged to take greater responsibility for promoting gender equality, justice and positive behavioural change in society.

The call was made at the Men’s Summit 2026, held under the theme, “Reimagining Behavioural Change for Gender Justice: Men Championing Gender Equality.”

The summit stressed that supporting gender equality must go beyond verbal expressions of commitment, urging men to demonstrate their support through responsible actions and behavioural change.

Participants noted that behaviours contributing to gender inequality and violations of women’s rights must be recognised and challenged. They identified sexual harassment, stalking and catcalling among practices that require greater public awareness, accountability and collective action.

The summit also highlighted the important roles of traditional and religious institutions in addressing sensitive gender-related matters.

Participants advocated proper referral of cases to relevant authorities and institutions, warning against informal handling or neglect of serious cases.
Men were further encouraged to speak openly about their personal challenges and maintain healthy communication with their partners, noting that silence and reluctance to seek help could prevent individuals from accessing the support they need.

The summit also raised concerns about child marriage, emphasising the need to protect children, safeguard their rights and promote practices that ensure their wellbeing and development.

The gathering concluded with a strong call for men to move from passive support to active responsibility in advancing gender justice.

Participants maintained that a more equitable society can only be achieved when men actively challenge harmful behaviours and contribute to creating an environment where all people are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.
