The Honourable Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has embarked on a strategic working visit to Beijing, China, aimed at strengthening defence cooperation, accelerating technology transfer, and expanding Nigeria’s local defence manufacturing capacity through the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).

Leading a high-powered Nigerian delegation, the Minister is holding a series of high-level engagements with Chinese defence and technology institutions to deepen bilateral military relations between Nigeria and China while supporting the modernization of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

Speaking during the visit, General Musa said the Federal Government is committed to transforming Nigeria from a consumer of defence equipment into a producer through strategic partnerships that promote technology transfer, local manufacturing, and capacity building.
“Our focus is clear: we are committed to partnerships that do not just make Nigeria a consumer, but an active producer. Through DICON, we will expand local production lines, drive absolute technology transfer, and achieve sustainable self-reliance in defence manufacturing to secure our nation,” he said.

The Minister’s engagements began at the China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) Innovation Centre, where discussions focused on integrating emerging technologies and artificial intelligence into Nigeria’s national security architecture to strengthen the country’s response to evolving asymmetric threats.

As part of efforts to enhance Nigeria’s defence industrial base, the delegation also visited the headquarters and exhibition centre of the China North Industries Corporation (NORINCO Group). During the visit, they inspected advanced land platforms, artillery systems, ammunition, and integrated defence solutions before holding closed-door talks with NORINCO’s leadership.
The discussions centred on technology transfer, technical capacity development, and the establishment of joint defence production lines in Nigeria in partnership with DICON.

At the Nigerian Embassy in Beijing, Nigeria’s Ambassador to China, Lieutenant General Abdulrahman Dambazau (Rtd), welcomed the delegation and described the Minister’s visit as timely and significant for strengthening the strategic relationship between both countries. He assured the delegation of the Embassy’s full diplomatic support throughout the week-long mission.

General Musa also met with Defence Attachés and embassy staff, commending their dedication to promoting Nigeria’s military diplomacy and urging them to continue serving as worthy ambassadors of the country.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the visit is expected to deliver both immediate and long-term benefits for Nigeria through enhanced military capability, equipment modernization, sustainable logistics and supply chains, industrial growth, greater strategic self-reliance, and stronger bilateral defence relations with China.
