As Nigeria celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance, the Association of Proprietors of Private Media Establishment of Nigeria (APPMEN) has called on political leaders and key stakeholders to consolidate the nation’s democratic gains by strengthening institutions, safeguarding press freedom, and prioritizing the welfare of citizens.
National Coordinator of APPMEN and Publisher/CEO of The Parliament Diary Newspaper, Chief Precious Enebuse, said the anniversary should serve as both a celebration of democratic resilience and an opportunity for critical reflection on the quality of governance and accountability in the country.
“Democracy at 27 is a milestone worth celebrating, but it must also be a moment of honest reflection. The strength of our democracy will not be measured by longevity alone, but by the quality of governance, accountability of leadership, and the wellbeing of Nigerians,” Enebuse stated in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
The media proprietors’ association noted that Nigeria’s democratic journey since 1999 has expanded civic participation, strengthened electoral processes, and sustained constitutional governance despite numerous political and socio-economic challenges.
APPMEN urged government institutions, including the National Assembly, the judiciary, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and anti-corruption agencies, to operate independently and effectively, stressing that strong institutions remain the bedrock of enduring democracy.
The association also emphasized the importance of protecting press freedom, describing the private media as a critical watchdog of democracy. It warned against censorship, intimidation, and policies capable of undermining the independence of media organisations.
According to APPMEN, democratic governance must deliver tangible benefits to citizens through improved security, healthcare, education, and economic opportunities, while also promoting national unity and inclusion across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic and regional groups.
The association commended civil society organisations, media practitioners, and citizens who have continued to champion democratic values through advocacy and public engagement. It encouraged Nigerians to remain actively involved in governance and hold public office holders accountable.
Reaffirming its commitment to responsible journalism and nation-building, APPMEN pledged to continue providing platforms for dialogue, public oversight, and factual reporting in support of democratic development.
The association further called on the Presidency, state governors, lawmakers, and other stakeholders to use the June 12 democracy anniversary as an opportunity to recommit to the ideals of justice, transparency, accountability, and service to the people.
