Amid growing concerns over the welfare, protection and future of children in Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to creating a safer, more inclusive and opportunity-driven environment for every Nigerian child.

The assurance came as the ministry rounded off a week-long series of activities commemorating the 2026 International Children’s Day celebration with a colourful children’s carnival held on Wednesday, coinciding with the Eid-el-Kabir festivities.

Speaking during the event, the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, charged Nigerian children to embrace responsibility, discipline and patriotism as future leaders of the country.

According to the minister, children must see themselves as critical stakeholders in the nation-building process and remain committed to values that would strengthen the Nigerian project.

“Children have their roles. They have their responsibility to be good children, law abiding, forward thinking and progressive towards the Nigeria project,” she said.

She noted that the carnival was not only organised to celebrate children but also to remind them of their importance to the country’s future.
“Today we celebrate you so that tomorrow you can celebrate Nigeria and yourselves. I want you to know that the Nigerian child is valued. We adore you,” the minister stated.

Imaan-Sulaiman Ibrahim further disclosed that the Federal Government was already implementing several reforms and policy measures aimed at improving the lives of children across the country.

She explained that the reforms range from strengthening legal frameworks protecting children’s rights to creating platforms that would enable Nigerian children to compete favourably with their peers globally.
“A lot of work is underway for the betterment of Nigerian children. A lot of reforms from strengthening legal instruments to creating enabling platforms for the Nigerian child to compete better,” she added.

Describing children as the nation’s pride and ambassadors, the minister stressed that investing in their growth, education and wellbeing remained central to national development.
“Nigerian children are our ambassadors and pride. They are the future, and the future is now,” she declared.

The carnival featured displays of entertainment performances and interactive activities involving children from different schools and groups, bringing the week-long Children’s Day celebration to a vibrant close.
