The is much excitement in the mariime sector as Nigeria secures a spot in the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council’s Category C for the 2026-2027 biennium, marking a significant diplomatic victory for the country.
The election, held on November 28, 2025, during the IMO General Assembly in London, saw Nigeria regain a strategic voice among maritime nations after a 14-year absence from the council.
Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, attributed the success to intensive diplomatic efforts, shuttle diplomacy, and advocacy across countries and maritime blocs.
The victory reinforces Nigeria’s commitment to international shipping governance and maritime development, with implications for the country’s blue economy and global maritime influence.
