NiMet Partners with AIM for Scale to Revolutionize Weather Forecasting for Nigerian Farmers

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), is set to strengthen its weather forecasting capabilities through a potential partnership with the Agricultural Innovation Mechanism for Scale (AIM for Scale). The initiative aims to provide reliable, real-time weather information to empower farmers, enhance planning, reduce risks, and boost agricultural productivity.

During a recent courtesy visit, the AIM for Scale team, led by Imara Salas and Mohammad Farrae, discussed potential collaboration opportunities with NiMet’s Director General/CEO, Prof. Charles Anosike. The partnership would leverage AI-powered weather forecasting to deliver innovative solutions tailored to Nigerian farmers’ needs.

Key objectives of the partnership include: Co-develop strategies for scaling up weather services; Mobilize investment to deliver innovative solutions and Provide reliable, real-time weather information to farmers

Benefits include: Improved weather forecasting accuracy; Enhanced planning and risk management for farmers and Increased agricultural productivity

Prof. Anosike emphasized NiMet’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for accurate weather and climate information, particularly among smallholder farmers. He highlighted the importance of AI-powered weather services and the need to expand radar coverage and in-situ weather stations across Nigeria.

Both parties agreed to develop and sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focusing on joint research initiatives to ensure the operational sustainability of the project.
