FAAN Launches Cashless Payment System in Abuja

Two weeks after the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos started the cashless payment system, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has launched “Operation Go Cashless Card,” at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), in Abuja today.

FAAN disclosed that system which aims to modernize airport transactions, enhance transparency, and improve the overall passenger experience, will also boost revenue.s

In her remarks during the launch, the Managing Director/CEO of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, congratulated the Commercial and Business Development Directorate for pushing through the initiative, despite challenges. She expressed gratitude to the President and Minister of Aviation for their support.

“This is more than a new payment system, it is a fundamental upgrade to the passenger experience and a powerful reaffirmation of our commitment to transparency and excellence.

“Following its successful launch in the dynamic city of Lagos, I am proud to officially announce the full deployment of ‘OPERATION GO CASHLESS here in Abuja, the Centre of Excellence. This is a comprehensive, cashless, and contactless payment solution for all our airports.

“Effective September 29th, 2025, we have started phasing out physical cash at all FAAN revenue points, including access gates, car parks, and VIP lounges.

For you, our passengers, this means faster, more secure transactions and an end to the delays of cash handling. It is a direct response to your call for modern, efficient, and world-class service”, Kuku said.

Explaining further the FAAN Managing highlighted the features and benefits which include:

– Seamless and Contactless Payments: Instant payments with a simple tap of the card
– Unified Wallet: Single balance usable across multiple registered cards
– Nationwide Validity: Valid across all FAAN-managed airports
– Real-time Notifications: SMS updates for every transaction.
– Secure Online Dashboard: Monitor balance and transaction history
– Customer Support: Dedicated hotline, email, and physical help desks.

Benefits of the Cashless System include:

– Faster Transactions: Reduced delays and increased efficiency
– Enhanced Security: Reduced risk of cash handling and theft

Earlier in her welcome remarks, the Director of Commercial and Business Development, Ms Adebola Akunbiade, who also represented the Managing Director, noted that the card part of FAAN’s “Go Cashless” vision, which promotes efficiency, transparency, and convenience. FAAN has partnered with Paystack to ensure the technology is robust and secure. The authority is working with media partners to educate the public about the card’s benefits and usage.

Trials at the the NAIA access gate were successful and two users of the cards observed by News Dot Africa were excited.
