As the popularity of volleyball continues to grow, its impact goes beyond just being a sport, in fact, the President of Volleyball, Nimrod Musa has recognised the significance of using the platform to promote the reduction of climate change. This is not just a trend, but a responsibility that we all must take seriously.
As the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko is no stranger to the power of sports to bring about positive change. However, when he heard about the recent initiative taken by the President of Volleyball to plant a tree using sports, he was truly delighted. In today’s fast-paced world, where climate change is a pressing issue, it has become more important than ever to take action towards environmental sustainability. And what better way to do so than through the world of sports, which has the ability to capture the attention and inspire millions of people.
Mallam Dikko, known for his progressive thinking and visionary leadership, sees this initiative as a perfect example of how sports can be used as a tool for social and environmental causes. Planting a tree may seem like a small act, but its impact on the environment is significant. Trees not only provide us with clean air and shade, but they also help in reducing the carbon footprint and combating climate change. “Sports have the power to bring about positive social change. Let us continue to use this power for good, not just for ourselves, but for the well-being of our planet.” With more collaborative efforts like this, we can create a brighter and greener future for generations to come.
The Director General, the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade asked the a fundamental question why sports is used for such an initiative? He interacted further, that, the answer lies in the undeniable influence that sports have on individuals and society as a whole. He said Sports bring people together, regardless of their backgrounds, cultures, or beliefs. It fosters a sense of community and camaraderie, enticing individuals to work towards a common goal. And when this goal is as noble as planting a tree for a better environment, it becomes a powerful force for change.
The Leadership of NSC believes that the sports community has a responsibility towards the environment and should use its platform to spread awareness and create a positive impact. By partnering with organisations like the Volleyball Federation, the National Sports Commission can reach a wider audience and inspire more people to take action.
NSC also acknowledges the efforts of the President of Volleyball in spearheading this initiative. Their passion for sports and the environment has led to the successful execution of this project, and their commitment to such causes is truly commendable.
Speaking earlier, the President explained that the effects of climate change are more evident now than ever before. ” We have witnessed devastating natural disasters, extremely weather conditions, and the loss of biodiversity. These effects have even reached the world of volleyball, as seen during the Division 11 matches where heavy rainfall affected the games. But beyond the world of sports, climate change has a much bigger significance in our daily lives. It affects our health, safety, and well-being. That is why it is crucial for us to take action and make a positive impact on reducing its effects.” He said. The President of Volleyball recognises the potential of the sport to bring about change and has taken the initiative to spread awareness and knowledge about climate change reduction. This includes the impact of climate change in our society and the importance of tree planting.
Nimrod went ahead to expanciate on the topic, he said , “with the rise of deforestation and desertification, it is crucial to support tree planting initiative. Not only does it contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, but it also helps to combat soil erosion and loss of biodiversity.”
He explained further that by planting trees, we are creating a sustainable solution for the Nigerian government in promoting tree planting initiatives. As they lead the way, the volleyball community is following suit. It has become a common practice to plant trees in the areas where volleyball matches are held, ensuring that the sport contributes to a greener and healthier environment. “The message is clear-it is not just about playing the game, but also making a positive impact on the environment. The volleyball community is encouraged to plant trees not only in the courts but also in their homes and communities. Choosing to plant trees serves as a reminder for us to reconnect with nature and to be responsible stewards of the environment.
Musa advised the athletes and spectators that the next time they attend a volleyball match, they should know that it goes beyond just being a spectator. You are also playing a part in promoting the reduction of climate change. Let us all take a cue from the President of Volleyball and make a significant difference in our society by planting trees and combating deforestation and desertification. It may seem like a small action, but together, we can make a big impact. Let us all join hands and work towards a better and more sustainable future for generations to come.
