World Meteorological Day 2025: Theme emphasizes the importance of international collaboration

The United Nations has commemorated World Meteorological Day 2025, marking the 75th anniversary of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The day’s theme, “Closing the Early Warnings Gap Together,” emphasizes the importance of international collaboration in ensuring that early warning systems protect everyone, everywhere.

Prof. Celeste Saulo, the Secretary-General in her goodwill message highlighted WMO’s contributions to saving lives, serving society, and protecting the planet over the past 75 years.

She noted that on Climate Change: The world witnessed the hottest 10 years on record in 2024, with 2024 confirmed as the hottest year on record.

On Early Warning Systems: WMO’s top priority is to ensure that early warning systems protect everyone, everywhere.

On International Collaboration: Collaboration among governments, National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, the private sector, and donors is crucial for strengthening early warning efforts.

On Economic Benefits: Every US$ 1 invested in early warnings is estimated to result in about US$ 9 in net economic benefits globally.

Call to Action
To ensure everyone is covered by multi-hazard early warning systems, the WMO urges stakeholders to: Innovate Inclusively: Scale up relevant technologies for production and dissemination of Early Warnings.

Cooperate: Foster coordination among various sectors.

Invest: Create, mobilize, and deploy resources for an effective Multi-Hazard Early Warning System.

The WMO reaffirms its commitment to a technologically advanced and efficient Early Warning System, and a safer, more resilient Nigeria.
