The Federal Government of Nigeria has formally accepted an invitation to join the BRICS alliance as a partner country. This move underscores Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and advancing strategic partnerships that align with its development objectives.

This is contained in a statement signed by the Acting Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebony, today Saturday, 18th January, 2025.

As a partner country, Nigeria aims to leverage the BRICS platform to enhance trade, investment, and socio-economic cooperation with member countries. The partnership is expected to advance shared goals in trade and investment, energy security, infrastructure development, technology, and climate change.

Nigeria’s membership also aligns with its national aspirations for inclusive growth, regional integration, and active participation in shaping a fair and equitable global economic order.

Some experts believe that Nigeria’s membership in BRICS will boost its image and enhance its leadership role in Africa. Others, however, have expressed concerns that joining the alliance may not yield tangible benefits for Nigeria.

The BRICS alliance comprises major emerging economies, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Nigeria joins other partner countries, such as Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed Nigeria’s commitment to engaging constructively with BRICS members to drive innovation and foster people-to-people exchanges.
