Oru Leonard

Bayelsa State has made a significant move in harnessing the vast opportunities presented by Nigeria’s Blue Economy Initiatives. The state government has appointed a Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy, Dr. Faith Izibenua Zibs-Godwin, to oversee the development of the sector.

This bold step is expected to enhance Bayelsa State’s participation in the federal government’s blue economy initiatives, which aim to unlock the economic potential of Nigeria’s marine resources. The state government has already begun drafting a comprehensive policy framework for the development of the Marine and Blue Economy sector, which will guide the Ministry’s operations.

The policy framework is designed to address gaps, challenges, and measures to explore the huge potential within the marine and blue economy sector. It will also ensure effective collaborations with relevant agencies for optimal productivity.

With the appointment of a dedicated commissioner and the development of a comprehensive policy framework, Bayelsa State is poised to become a leading player in Nigeria’s blue economy. The state’s wealth of marine resources, including its extensive coastline and waterways, makes it an ideal location for investments in the sector.

As part of its efforts to harness the potential of the blue economy, Bayelsa State is also planning to establish a Marine Safety Task Force and create economic zones known as Fish Cities. These initiatives are expected to enhance waterway safety, promote economic growth, and create jobs for residents.
