UI Holds Retreat for Student Leaders.

The management of the University of Ibadan has organised a Retreat for Student Leaders. It was attended by members of the newly elected Student Union Executive Committee, members of the Students Representative Council, Faculty leaders, as well as leaders in the Halls of Residence
The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, was represented by the Deputy Vice- Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Aderonke M. Baiyeroju at the Retreat.
In her opening remarks, Professor Baiyeroju urged the students to balance unionism and academic excellence.
She explained that leadership is a huge responsibility that should not be taken with levity and advised the students’ representatives to ensure a peaceful administration of their mandates by exhibiting maturity and purposeful student unionism.
Professor Baiyeroju told the student leaders that everything should not be about confrontation, protests, and conflicts. She urged them to learn to consult and bring matters to the table for peaceful resolution.
Six paper presentations were made at the Retreat. The papers were:-
■ Conflict Dynamics and Student Unionism by Professor Ayo Hammed of the Department of Guidance and Counselling.
■ Financial Probity and Management of Students’ Funds by Mr. A. Popoola, Bursar of the University.
■ Qualities and Skills for Effective Student Leadership by Mr Oluwasegun Akeju, a former President of the UI Students Union.
■ Background and Way Forward with the Students Union by Professor A. I. Abiona, Dean of Students
■ Effective Communication in Student Leadership by Dr. Comfort Aiki-Raji, Deputy Dean of Students.
■ University Rules, Regulations and Due Processes by Mr. T. I. Musa, Deputy Registrar (Students).
Meanwhile, it has been announced that the swearing-in- ceremony of the newly elected Students Union officers will hold on Monday, 13 May 2024.
