FG, Labour Unions Meets In Abuja To Reposition Labour Administration System For Effective Development

Just as the future of work is uncertain, so is the future of trade unions. Globalization and demographic, environmental and technological changes are changing the labour markets of today and will determine those of tomorrow.

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment had on Wednesday the 26th of July, 2023 organized the occasion of the 6th Registrar of Trade Union’s 2-day workshop on “current challenges and prospects of Trade Union Administration in Nigeria .

The Permanent Secretary Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment Kachollom Daju said the Registrar of Trade Union Workshop is being organized pursuant to resolutions reached between stakeholders and the Ministry at the inaugural workshop in 2013 where it was agreed that the workshop would be an annual event

As part of the Ministry’s cardinal mandate to promote quality professional service delivery in line with international best practice,it is against the back drop that the theme of 2023: “Repositioning the labour administration system for effective socio-economic development in Nigeria” becomes very apt and timely, noting that effective Labour Administration is key to national development everywhere in the world.

Daju noted that the purpose of the workshop is to acquaint participants with current trends and contemporary issues affecting Labour Administration in Nigeria and it’s implication for sustainable development

She added that the workshop will further equip participants with knowledge, skills and expertise to efficiently manage trade union affairs, workplace disputes, jurisdictional scope dynamics, unfair labour practices as it will also prepare stakeholders on how to handle the current challenges faced in the world of work as well as how to harness the opportunities presented by the future of work in Nigeria

Daju commended all on the significant roles they have all played in fostering unity amongst the stakeholders in the labour circle.
” We are all partners in progress in the collective quest to build a strong and virile nation, that would compete favourably with other countries in the comity of nations. These education and empowerment workshops convened annually are essential ingredients for the development of a well-informed workforce which in turn contributes to good governance and the overall reduction in the number of industrial disputes in our workplaces.

Thus, as change agents and promoters of productivity. enhancement, it is clear that the fundamental objectives of decent work and harmonious industrial relations cannot be achieved without your contributions as key actors of the labour movement in this great country.”

She applauded some personalities whom she said had brought the program back to life.
“I would like to take a moment to appreciate the averred commitment and determination of the Director, Trade Unions Services and Industrial Relations (TUSIR), Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosun and the Director, Registrar of Trade Unions (RTU) Mr. Falonipe Amos, and their team for working so hard to ensure that this programme comes back to life.”

The Permanent Secretary added that Recommendations and Resolutions that will be reached at the Workshop, as she believed they serve as a a roadmap that will chart the way forward towards repositioning our Labour Administration System for effective Socio-economic development of this great Country.

Delivering a welcome address, the Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations, Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosun, said the conference serves as a significant platform for knowledge sharing, critical discussions, and strategic planning as well as provides an invaluable opportunity to delve into the challenges faced by labor administration system in Nigeria and explore the various prospects for its improvement and advancement.

Igbinosun said; “As we gather here today, let us strive to collectively address the pressing issues that hinder our labour sector’s growth and development.

“Nigeria, being a country with a vibrant and dynamic workforce, relies heavily on the effective functioning of its labour administration system. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our labour laws are enforced, workers’ rights are protected, and a harmonious relationship is fostered between labour, management, and government.”

He said that only through a robust and efficient labour administration framework can stakeholders tackle the numerous challenges faced by workers and create an environment conducive to sustainable socio-economic growth.
